Oral Cancer Screenings

Although many people don’t realize it, their mouths are one of their body’s best early warning signals of impending health risks. Many of us know about the perils of gingivitis and gum disease, but less of us know about the risk oral cancer. Since early detection of this potentially life-threatening condition can save lives, Hiremath Family Dentistry will perform a visual oral cancer screening every time a patient is in our office for a dental exam in Oro Valley or a professional tooth cleaning.

The Proof is in the Numbers

Although oral cancer is not something that you hear about as often as breast cancer or lung cancer, it’s not something to be taken lightly. The American Cancer Society last reported that over 40,000 men and women were diagnosed with oral cancer in 2014 – and we can only assume that number continues to increase with each passing year. And if you think you’re immune from the condition because you’re a non-smoker, you may want to reconsider. Studies indicate that over 25% of oral cancer occurrences have been in individuals who did not smoke.

Oral Cancer Symptoms

Oral cancer is like all other cancers – it is the uncontrollable growth of cells that cause destruction to their surrounding area. Oral cancer can affect your lips, tongue, cheeks, the floor of your mouth, your throat, your sinuses, and your hard and soft palates. Its most common symptoms include:

  • Persistent sores in the areas mentioned above that have not healed within two weeks
  • Red, white, or speckled patches that are velvety in appearance
  • Chronic sore throat, hoarseness, or an unexplained change in voice
  • Lumps, bumps, or thickenings and swellings in the areas mentioned above
  • Rough spots, crustiness, or eroded areas in the areas mentioned above
  • Sudden difficulty chewing or swallowing food

Symptoms will not be the same in every patient, and some individuals may not even be aware of the evidence of early oral cancer without a visual cancer screening in Oro Valley. That’s one of the many reasons that sticking to an annual dental exam is critically important.
